The Swanks was organized about 1956. The car club original membership was about 15 and then developed into a larger group of about 25 with the meetings at Daryl Emery's house. They eventually had a club car ("B" Altered roadster that was raced at Twin Cities dragway setting a national record in "B" Altered with Gary Hofsommer driving). Although the original members departed in several different directions Steve Olson revived it several years later. Steve also repaired the club car and raced it again. The club would drive 4 or 5 cars to various car shows in the area, i.e., Winnipeg, Valley City, Gopher State Timing, etc.

From Dave "Pete" Peterson 7/23/2012: "I was a member of the Swanks and remember well the trouble I got in when we put "Smitties" on my Dad's company car. In 1956-57 I had a new red and white Ford station wagon with a Police Intercepter engine with three speed overdrive-transmission and could 'get rubber' in all three gears. I also recall Paul Knox was in the group. Thad could confirm that. Regards, Dave "Pete" Peterson."
A Swanks Car Club is now active in the Casselton area and puts on a terrific annual car show. See their Facebook Page. They also have a web site in the process of building (January 2018) at https://www.swanks.org/.
